Abstract Assemblage, 1975

By Norman Ives

United States, 1970s
This abstract assemblage is the work of Norman Ives (1923–1978). An artist and graphic designer based in New Haven, he was also a publisher of Fine portfolios of many of the century’s top modernist artists. Placed horizontally and diagonally, blocks of wood painted orange, blue, white, and cream create a rhythmic but nonrepeating sequence. The assemblage is set within an aluminium frame and inscribed on back: To Bill, Dec. 7, 1975, Norman Ives.
