Walnut Gate Leg Dining Table, Model 4656

By George Nelson for Herman Miller

United States, 1950s
George Nelson designed this American walnut gate leg table, model 4656, for Herman Miller in 1946, early in his tenure at the firm. Nelson updated a classic form — which converts from console to dining table — for the modern aesthetic of the mid-century. The large notched knuckle joints create a striking interlocking pattern across the width of the top. Spring catches hold the legs in place when the table is closed. Dimensions below are when fully open. Closed, the table is 40" W x 18.5" D. Each drop panel is 24". Maker's label underneath.
